The Tyson was assigned a resupply mission to Ganymede Station. The Federation operates a remote science station located on a marginal class M planet close to the Heucal Nebula. Every ninety days, a ship assigned to Galileo Station makes the trip to the station, replacing personnel and carrying supplies that can't be replicated, such as complex scientific equipment. The permanent roster on the station is a dozen scientists who alternate between working at Ganymede station and then spending three months working at Sarlea base to analyze their data, write research papers and prepare grant requests.
When we entered standard orbit over the Ganymede Station, Cadet Dingus could not hail them. Dingus verified that she could ping the computer at the base and verified the communication system was working, but repeated efforts brought no results. The station was not answering our hails. I requested my Chief Science Officer to scan the station. Instead of the twelve life signs we expected, we found only two.
I ordered Commander T'Mari to take a team of security personnel and Cadet Dingus down to the base and perform an assessment. None of the telemetries from the base implied a problem, and it still seemed likely that we were encountering data errors caused by the adjacent nebula.
Our worst fears were realized when Commander T'Mari and her team arrived at the base. Ten scientists were dead, one was in critical condition, and the last succumbed to whatever had killed his comrades as our team arrived. I immediately ordered an entire away team under my XO Commander Markus to transport down and find out what happened. I further ordered the away team to be in full EVA suits since the initial assessment had found no obvious signs of what had killed these scientists.
Doctor Storm turned her attention to the remaining scientist, aided by XO Markus, who had years of experience as a doctor before transferring to the Command branch. They attempted to stabilize the scientist, Doctor Goddard, while Commander Bravin, my science officer, gathered samples with the aid of the other away team members.
Doctor Storm recommended we get the security team and cadet Dingus into EVA suits, and this was effective for T'Mari and Barbosa, but Dingus had already been affected and almost at once began to display disorientation and hallucinations, rambling on about being a river to her people.
Between Doctor Storm and the XO, they had Cadet Dingus beamed back to the Tyson and placed in Quarantine.
Chief Science Officer Bravin discovered that the planet was home to large growths resembling terrestrial mushrooms but meters tall. Although this has not been confirmed by lab tests, Commander Bravin has theorized that a scientist brought one of these mushrooms into the station to study and ignored safety protocols, perhaps thinking, "it's just a mushroom". He further speculates that the mushrooms released spores which got into the lungs of the station personnel, causing them to suffocate as the spores began to germinate in the warm moist tissues of the lungs. There is no evidence that studying the local plant growth was part of the station's scientific protocols.
Further analysis of the collected data and personal logs of the scientists may give us more information. At the recommendation of Doctor Storm, the filters in the life support system have been changed to eliminate any spores that may be left. I will recommend to Admiral Scrumptious that a team sterilize the station before any scientists are allowed to return.
Unfortunately, Doctor Goddard succumbed to the contagion. All twelve bodies were placed in stasis containers and are being stored in quarantine aboard the Tyson.
Commander T'Mair and Ensign Barbosa are in quarantine and are being evaluated by Doctor Storm, but appear to be unaffected. Cadet Dingus is responding to anti-fungal medication, which further supports CSO Bravin's theory on how this occurred. Dingus is expected to be back on duty cleaning space toilets within a few days.
At the suggestion of Ensign Time, I have deployed a type VI probe in orbit, configured to be a warning beacon and warning Starfleet personnel or visitors against going to the station until such time as it's restored to operation.
