After receiving the report from Commander T’Mari, that both male and female colonists had been forced into servitude on the slightest pretext, and the only court of appeal being Shogun Ku, I decided that our next step was to gather more intel. The few words T’Mari had been able to exchange with Sama were insufficient to identify which colonists wanted to leave. Based on our interviews, it seemed most of them were satisfied to stay despite the continuous conflict between the two Shoguns and their respective clans.
I met with my command team to devise a strategy. Commander Bravin suggested we use some drug to render the Shogun unconscious. Although this would have been effective, I was concerned about how the Shogun’s guard might react if he passed out unexpectedly after meeting with the away team. Still, it was the kernel of a good idea, and I asked what our options might be to separate Sama from the Shogun so she could be fully interviewed.
Doctor Jervil and XO Markus put their heads together. They were able to put together an injectable drug that would mimic the symptoms of “chicken pox,” a disease long eradicated in the Federation. The drug would cause fever and for Sama’s skin to break out in red blotches. Obvious signs of a medical condition the Shogun would have no ability to treat.
Commander T’Mari, my security chief, contacted Sama on the comm badge we had left on the surface and explained the plan, then beamed down an injector. Sama was afraid, but T’Mari was able to convince her that she need have no fear and that Doctor Jervil would ensure her safety.
After giving the drug time to work, we beamed down to the planet. We requested another interview with Shogun Ku, carefully not noticing the blotches already beginning to appear on Sama’s face and hands. By the time we arrived at the Shogun’s’ court, the blotches were in full bloom, noticed at once by the Shogun, who insisted we must have infected Sama.
Doctor Jevril explained to the Shogun that “chicken pox” was a fairly minor disease in the Federation but that it had been known to cause sterility in adult males. The Shogun insisted that we take Sama to the ship for treatment, and we did so.
Once Sama was in sick bay and being treated by Doctor Jevril, we were able to interview her and identify the other thirty-one individuals who wished to leave New Japan. As we didn’t want to use weapons on the surface, it would be necessary to mass transport on all the colonists within a few seconds.
Engineer Nova419 suggested we create wristbands that we would hand out to the colonists as we “scanned them for infection”. The wrist bans handed out to those who wished to leave would contain communications beacons that the transporter could lock on to. I authorized Nova419 to complete this work, and with her android efficiency, she could create them in short order.
While XO Markus, Doctor Jevril, and I worked on the logistics of accommodating our visitors, Commander Bravin took an away team to the surface, scanning the colonists and handing out the wristbands. Once all colonists had been scanned, the away team was transported back.
Cadet Dingus used all the transporter capacity, locked on to the thirty-one wristbands, and transported all the colonists to the Tyson within ten seconds, giving the Shogun’s guards no time to respond.
All transportees requested asylum, and I informed the Shogun of the situation. He was unhappy and demanded them to be returned, but under Federation law I had no choice. Once they requested asylum, I had to return them to Galileo for review by the sector commander, Admiral Scrumptious.
The entire crew performed to a high standard and I will mention this in my report to Starfleet Command.
