Captain's Log: Stardate 230205.444
What started as a routine mission to repair or replace a remote comms station 14.2 LY spinward of the station has quickly taken two nasty turns to the left. We took advantage of this mission to test changes to subspace geometry that Daystrom Institute developed to increase the cruising speed on the Galaxy Class from warp 9.2 to warp 9.3. Our speed test was initially a success reaching warp 9.31.
But initial scans on approach to our destination indicated that the comms station had disappeared. Then Chief Engineer Lane dropped us out of warp without warning, shutting down power to avert catastrophic damage to the warp drive. A diagnostic revealed misalignment of a plasma injector into the warp field coil housing, causing damage to the housing collar. Lane noted that realignment of the injectors can only be done by manual override in engineering and speculated that meant a saboteur was at large. Ensign Underall reviewed computer records and pinpointed an engineer, Lt. Cmdr Kim Korora, as having accessed the system overrides. She was quickly apprehended by security and interrogated by intel where she revealed that her actions were forced: a family member is being held hostage by an unknown protagonist. Her instruction was to knock out all our energy systems, but she weighed up the hundreds of lives at stake and damaged our warp capacity instead, leaving us with impulse, weapons and life support.
We have detected three incoming Cardassian vessels and must assume they are hostile despite our nominal truce with their Union. We cannot flee and we are outgunned. I have ordered security to drop shields and power down weapons systems so that we appear completely defenceless, but to load transphasic torpedoes in the tubes. Now we wait.
