Jupiter Mining Corporation runs dilithium mining on the planet and the supervisor, Diziet Sma, had found a discrepancy in his inventory, and evidence that one or more of his miners were skimming the highly valuable dilithium after refining. He conducted an internal investigation, identified the two miners responsible, and requested that Starfleet take them to Sarlea base for trial. Although the mining colony has a brig, it’s more suited to housing overnight drunks than workers accused of theft.

When Tyson arrived, manager Sma sent us the transporter coordinates, assuring us that he had the two miners in his office and that they wouldn’t resist. Commander T’Mari and cadet Gator beamed down to secure the prisoners. By the time they arrived, the situation had changed. Commander T’Mari immediately called the ship, requesting backup. The two miners had taken the manager, and his staff hostage wired them with explosives and were making demands that would get them off the planet. I immediately beamed down with a full team to support Commander T’Mari.

On the ground, T’Mari advised that there was no good way to attack the miner’s position. The mine manager’s office was on the second floor of the Admin building, and there were no windows to allow surveillance from outside. T’Mari had attempted to negotiate, and cadet Gator had offered herself in exchange for the hostages, but the hostage taker, Esti, was adamant she would only talk to the Captain.

I removed my phaser and tricorder and ascended to the second floor. It was clear that Esti was serious. The mine manager and two hostages were all wired with explosives, and Esti had both a pulse rifle of a non-Federation manufacturer and a remote detonator. I introduced myself and asked Esti for her demands, hoping we could negotiate a mutually agreeable settlement.

Unexpectedly Cader P’tuh came charging up the stairs, attempting to offer himself instead of me. Surprised, at what might be an attack, Esti fired her rifle and hit P’tuh in the leg, making him cry out in pain. I turned my back on Esti, helping Ptuh down the ramp where Doctor Jervil could tend to his injury, then resumed my meeting with Esti.

“Just to be clear Captain, if I let go of this remote detonator, all these bombs detonate. These three hostages will die, you, I and my friend Derek die, and various other devices I planted in the mine will detonate. JMC will be lucky if they ever take another gram of dilithium from this planet.”

“Very well, what are your demands?”

Esti’s demands were simple. Provide a warp-capable vessel for her escape, and 100 kg of refined dilithium and she would leave, keeping only Diziet Sma as a hostage. I informed Esti I would meet with my team and arrange to get her what she wanted but she had to release a hostage first to show good faith. Unexpectedly, Esti jabbed a control on her remote, and the building shook from an explosion.

“That one was just a demonstration, Captain, so you know I am not messing around. I want off this stinking ball of rock, and you’re going to help me.”

Once I rejoined my crew, Commander Qwandrii informed me of a new development. The second miner, Derek Byron, wanted no part of this and was desperate to help us to get a reduced sentence. Qwandrii advised him that I would do my best to speak on his behalf if he assisted us and in return, he gave us detailed technical information on the detonators in the bombs and Esti’s control unit. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Esti’s partner in this crime revealed that the Ferengi were the buyers of the dilithium and had also provided the weapon Esti used.

With this new information, I put my crew to work finding a way to seemingly meet Esti’s demands without allowing her to escape, but my first priority was to save lives. If Esti escaped, she would be hunted throughout the Federation, but that was preferable to losing the mine and the personnel in explosions.

After accepting suggestions from the crew, I assigned Chief Bravin and Mr. Time to decode and nullify the remote detonation of the bombs, assigned Cadet Nova419 to disable the warp drive in the runabout in a way that wouldn’t be readily apparent, and Doctor Jervil prepared a remotely triggered sleeping gas canister that would be placed in the runabout.

Commander Bravin advised me that he thought he and Ensign Time had the remote control sorted out. At this point, Esti was getting restless and threatening to kill a hostage to “hurry me up,” and I was left with no choice. Pauline had disabled the warp drive so we knew Esti couldn’t get far. Doctor Jervil had installed the sleeping gas canister, rigged to the pilot’s seat so sitting down would trigger it, and Commander Bravin was ready to block any remote detonation.

Esti released her other hostages and showing no interest in the fate of his co-conspirator Derek Byron, he and mine manager Sma made their way to the runabout and locked themselves inside. As I saw Esti sit in the pilot’s seat, releasing the sleeping gas, I ordered Ensign Time to block the signal from the remote control and tried to wait calmly to confirm we were successful.

The plan worked to perfection. Cadet Nova and Ensign Time removed all the bombs that had been planted, five remaining. Doctor Jervil ensured manager Sma was okay and placed him in the facility’s infirmary to recover. Corporal Esti was placed in restraints, and Commander T’Mari took great pleasure (at least I think so, hard to tell with that Vulcan poker face) in transporting Esti up to the Tyson and locking her in the brig,

End Log

Captain Ellemir Maven

Commanding Officer, USS Tyson

+4

Captain’s Log – SD230127 Crew Manifest Captain – Captain Ellemir Maven Chief Science Officer – Commander David Bravin Chief Medical Officer – Commander Storm Jervil Chief Intelligence Office – Commander Kassi Quandrii Chief Security Officer – Commander T’Mari Ops Officer – Cadet Pen Dingus Helm – Cadet P’tuh the Great Engineer – Cadet Pauline Nova419 […]

[3
24,83,87,85,64,69,66,67,68,70,73,75,22,72,65,86,63,74,84,71,88
post-1314","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-tyson","tag-3rd-rock-grid","tag-alpha-quadrant","tag-cosplay","tag-live-long-and-prosper","tag-open-simulator","tag-prg","tag-roleplay","tag-roleplay-missions","tag-roleplaying-games","tag-rp","tag-science-fiction","tag-space-station","tag-star-trek","tag-star-trek-fans","tag-starfleet","tag-starfleet-academy","tag-starfleet-infinity","tag-starships","tag-trekker","tag-trekkie","tag-uss-neil-degrasse-tyson
["GET
